Course Levels

  • Fundamental - Grade 8 equivalency: to learn reading, writing and basic math & computer skills
  • Intermediate - Grade 10 equivalency: to prepare for the many vocational programs that require Grade 10.
  • Advanced - Grade 11 equivalency: to prepare for most vocational & technical programs and to complete prerequisites for academic programs.
  • Provincial - equivalent to academic Grade 12: to prepare for university and some technical programs. Courses can be used towards a BC Adult Graduation diploma.

Fundamental Level Course
Equivalent to Grade 8

ENGLISH

ENGL 011
Introduction to basic reading, writing, spelling and grammar.
Prerequisite: Meet with an advisor.

ENGL 012
Builds on basic language skills studied in ENGL 011. Students gain confidence in reading short passages and writing simple correct sentences, as well as in setting personal goals.
Prerequisite: ENGL 011 or assessment.

ENGL 013
Course is designed to help adults read better. Emphasis is also placed on writing, spelling and introductory computer skills needed to succeed in other Adult Basic Education courses or in meeting learning goals.
Prerequisite: ENGL 012 or assessment.

ENGL 014
Learners acquire increased fluency in both reading and oral communications, as well as develop writing strategies.
Prerequisite: ENGL 013 or assessment.

ENGL 015
Builds on everyday reading and writing skills developed in Engl 014. Useful for developing strategies for dealing with personal, work and educational situations.
Prerequisite: ENGL 014 or assessment.

ENGL 016
Focuses on mastery of fundamental skills in reading comprehension, narrative writing and acquisition of study skills needed for success in ENGL 037 and other intermediate level courses.
Prerequisite: ENGL 015 or assessment.

MATH

MATH 011
Introduction to Addition and Subtraction.
Prerequisite: Basic reading skills.

MATH 012
Increase skills in Addition and Subtraction and Introduction to Multiplication.
Prerequisite: Math 011 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 013 
Increase skills in Multiplication and Introduction to Division.
Prerequisite: Math 012 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 014
Focus on Decimals.
Prerequisite: Math 013 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 015
Focus on Common Fractions.
Prerequisite: Math 014 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 016
Focus on Ratio, Proportion and Percent.
Prerequisite: Math 015, or assessment.

COMPUTER STUDIES

COST 020
Designed to provide adult learners with a basic introduction to computers including keyboarding, word processing, e-mail and the internet.
Prerequisites: Basic reading skills
Recommended: ENGL 016 or assessment

Intermediate Level Courses
Equivalent to Grade 10

This level may be used as preparation for admission to selected vocational or technical programs such as Automotive Service Technician or Culinary Arts , or to prepare the student for the ABE Advanced Level. It provides entrance to vocations requiring a Grade 10 completion.

ENGLISH

ENGL 037
Focuses on reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary activities. Useful as preparation for the GED exam.
Prerequisite: ENGL 020 or ENGL 025 or assessment.

MATH

MATH 030
Includes survey of math skills and introduction to metrics, area/volume, ratios, geometry and algebra.
Prerequisite: MATH 016 or assessment. Assessment required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.
Recommended: Grade 8 reading level.

Advanced Level Courses
Equivalent to Grade 11

Courses at this level may lead to the ABE Advanced Level Certificate or may be used as preparation for admission to selected vocational and technical programs at BCIT and other community colleges or to prepare the student for the ABE Provincial Level. It is not a Grade 12 diploma.
An English, Math, Science or Computer Studies and an elective (which may be a science) are required for an Advanced Level Certificate.

ENGLISH

ENGL 047
Focuses on essay writing, research and some study of literature. Useful as preparation for the LPI exam.
Prerequisite: Min. C+ in ENGL 037 or assessment or permission. Strongly recommended that students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

MATH

MATH 045 Principles of Math 11: Part I
This advanced level course includes an introduction to algebra, solving equations, and roots. MATH 045 and 046 combined gives credit equivalent to Principles of Math 11.
Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 030 or assessment.

MATH 046 Principles of Math 11: Part II
This advanced level course includes advanced algebra, fractional equations, trigonometry, and graphing. MATH 045 and 046 give credit equivalent to Principles of Math 11.
Prerequisite: "C+" in Math 045 or assessment or permission.

MATH 047 - ALGEBRA
This course is a prerequisite for many technological and vocational programs in the province. Prerequisite: Min. C+ in MATH 041 or assessment or permission. Assessment required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.
Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

COMPUTER STUDIES

COST 047
Designed primarily for students with basic computer skills. Topics may include introduction to computer hardware, Windows, word processing, the internet, spreadsheet and electronic mail.
Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or equivalent or assessment. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.
Recommended: Moderate keyboarding skills.

BIOLOGY

BIOL 047
Introductory Biology course which includes a survey of all kingdoms of life, evolution and ecology. This course is a prerequisite of many university and vocational programs.
Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or equivalent or assessment. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.

CHEMISTRY

CHEM 047
Introductory Chemistry course which is a prerequisite for many vocational and university programs.
Prerequisite: Principles of Math 11 or MATH 041 or assessment. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.

PHYSICS

PHYS 047
Introductory physics course which is a prerequisite for many technology, vocational and university programs.
Prerequisite: Principles of Math 11 or MATH 041 or assessment. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.
Recommended: Math 047 be taken concurrently.

Provincial Level Courses
Equivalent to Grade 12

This level may lead to the ABE Provincial Diploma and University Entrance. Please see an Advisor to determine the courses you could take to complete this level.

ENGLISH

ENGL 067
Focuses on the study of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, essay writing and research. A prerequisite for many technical and university courses.
Prerequisite: Min. C+ in ENGL 047 or assessment or permission. Strongly recommended: Students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

MATH

MATH 067 – ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY
This course is a required course for some business, technology, science and engineering programs at university.
Prerequisite: Min. C+ in MATH 047 or Principles of Math 11 or assessment or permission. Assessment required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 11 reading level.

COMPUTER STUDIES

COST 067
Practical study of computer applications and skills, and how to apply them to effectively solve problems in academic, work and personal lives. Instruction modules may include publishing/presentation, advanced spreadsheets, database management, and information technology.
Prerequisite: Min. C+ in COST 047 or permission. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.

BIOLOGY

BIOL 067
Covers human biology, basic genetics and cell biology. This course is useful for university and vocational programs, especially the health sciences.
Prerequisite: Minimum ‘C+’ in English 047, or equivalent assessment and minimum ‘C+’ in Science 030 or equivalent, or permission of the Instructor.

CHEMISTRY

CHEM 067
Useful for students intending to take science courses at university or BCIT.
Prerequisite: Principles of Math 11 or MATH 041 or assessment, and Chemistry 11 or CHEM 047. Assessment is required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.

PHYSICS

PHYS 067
Useful for students intending to take science courses in university or technical programs.
Prerequisite: Minimum ‘C+’ in Math 046 or 047 or Principles of Math 11 or equivalent or assessment and minimum ‘C+’ in Physics 047 or Physics 11.
Recommended: Physics 11 or Phys 047.
